I grew up in a pretty strict home where we weren't allowed to watch much TV. We played outside and read books and made things in our shop in the basement. But, there was an exception to watching TV and that was early on Saturday mornings.

Do you remember Saturday morning cartoons? Some of my greatest memories of being younger are shuffling into the kitchen in my pajamas, sleepies still clouding my eyes, and reaching for a bowl, spoon, cereal and milk. My siblings and I would plop down on the living room floor with our cereal and watch DuckTales, Alvin and the Chipmunks, and Pound Puppies. Those were good times. Really good times that I'm sad my son will never get to experience the way I did.

Saturday mornings meant cereal and cartoons. That's just how it was, but not how it is anymore.

The New York Times reports that in the last 15 years, the sale of breakfast cereal is down almost 30%. The reason may shock you because it certainly shocked me.

The New York Times also reports that a 2015 survey by Mintel, a global research firm, found that 40% of millennials say that eating cereal is "inconvenient...because they had to clean up after eating it."

Wait! What?

Have we really raised a generation of people so consumed by living a fast paced life that they can't be bothered to take 45 seconds to rinse out their cereal bowl and put it in the dishwasher? Apparently so.

According to the Chicago Tribune, a 2014 national survey, spearheaded by Braun Research, found that 82 percent of parents were made to do chores when they were little, but when they were asked if they make their own kids do chores, only 28 percent said yes.

So much has changed since I was a kid, but, in case anyone is interested, my son will play outside and build stuff and use his imagination. And I'll pull up old cartoons on Netflix for him. Oh, and I'll make him put away his dirty cereal bowl. I know. I'm such a mean mom.
