A new water main and water lines are being installed on Baldwin Street between Main Street and Corliss Avenue.

Crews from G. Devincentis and Son Construction Company of Binghamton started work on the project on Monday.

A supervisor said a 12-inch water main, along with six-inch and eight-inch lines, will be installed. Workers will be digging a deep excavation because of a tunnel that crosses the street linking the main hospital with the now-closed Picciano building.

Johnson City Mayor Greg Deemie said the water infrastructure upgrade is a joint project between the village and United Health Services. They are splitting the $400,000 cost of the work.

Deemie said it will take two to three months to complete the project.

Baldwin Street is closed to through traffic in the work zone. Ambulances are able to access the entrance to the hospital's emergency department.

Aldo Brozzetti said customers are able to get to his pizza place on Baldwin Street by way of Corliss Avenue. People also can access the parking lot near Harrison Street on the west side of the shop.

This story has been updated to include additional information about the project from the Johnson City mayor.
