Six Arrested in Binghamton Police Underage Alcohol Sting

A half-dozen employees of Binghamton businesses have been arrested for allegedly selling alcohol to a minor in a police undercover operation.

The action by city police was first reported by Pipe Dream, Binghamton University's student-run newspaper.

Binghamton police records show six men and women were charged Saturday with misdemeanor counts of unlawfully dealing with a minor.

The newspaper report indicated police used a woman who was under the legal drinking age of 21 to purchase alcohol at several establishments.

The police department released the business addresses and the names of employees who face misdemeanor charges as a result of the sting.

Although the arrests were listed on the department's Facebook page, no news release was issued identifying the businesses targeted in the undercover operation.

The arrests were made at businesses on State Street, Court Street, Hawley Street, Leroy Street, Oak Street and Vestal Avenue.

Police did not indicate how many other bars or stores were checked in the weekend sting.

The operator of a Binghamton bar not involved in the weekend sting questioned the decision not to name the establishments where employees allegedly sold alcohol to a minor.

The bar owner - who asked to remain anonymous - said "anywhere else it's the headline."
