The Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park has a new family member. At the beginning of July the zoo welcomed a happy and healthy red panda cub!

The zoo wants your help! They are accepting submissions to name the little guys through Friday August 24.

The zoo plans to release the name of the red panda cub during a press conference on August 31.

The red panda cub is extremely important for conservation. According to the Binghamton Zoo's website:

The red panda is listed as endangered because its population has declined by 50% over the past 20 years. This decline is primarily due to deforestation, which eliminates red pandas’ nesting sites and sources of food. Through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the Binghamton Zoo participates in several Species Survival Plans, ensuring the long-term health and survival of captive species, including the red panda.

The zoo website also says the red panda cub isn't visible at this time:

Please note that the cub is not visible at this time, and may not be for several weeks until it is big enough to climb out of the nest box.
