A new New York State law requires new or replacement smoke detectors to be replaced by April 1, 2019.

According to WBNG the Johnson City Fire Department would like to remind the community to replace their new or replacement smoke detectors before the beginning of April.

The new law states that all new or replacement smoke detectors in NYS are required to be powered by a 10-year, sealed, non-removable battery. The smoke detectors can also be hardwired to the house.

The Johnson City Fire Department says homeowners and landlords are required to upgrade their smoke detectors before selling or renting their properties.

The JCFD has an entire page of information dedicated to this new law. All the information on this new law can be found here.
