Your wedding day is supposed to be the best day of your life, but at what cost? Bustle recently found out that most Americans are willing to go into debt in order to have the wedding of their dreams.

My fiancé and I have been generously gifted money from both of our parents in order to pay for our wedding next year, but if that hadn't been the case, we would have needed to sit down and talk about a budget.

When we started looking at engagement rings, most jewelry stores mentioned that they offered a payment plan if we found a ring that was out of our budget. How much do Americans really spend on weddings and engagements? Forbes says that the average cost of an engagement ring is now $5,000. Excuse me?

If your parents are not helping you and your partner pay for the wedding, and you two don't want to take out a loan to pay for it, the best thing that you can do is sit down and discuss a budget and decide what you want to splurge on and what you think that you two can save on.

...And then start squirreling money away for the next year or so. Weddings are not cheap, but you can find ways to make them more affordable.
