A modern newspaper printing complex in Broome County is expected to become home to a hemp processing operation.

According to Pressconnects.com, a company called Southern Tier Hemp plans to buy the abandoned plant in Johnson City from Gannett Company.

The purchase price for the former Gannett Central New York Production Facility was not disclosed.

In recent days, there has been increased activity at the massive building which was constructed on a reclaimed industrial "brownfield" site.

Trucks have been hauling away large containers of material that are being removed from the building.

The $50 million printing site at CFJ Boulevard and Gannett Drive operated for only 12 years before it was shut down. The Press & Sun-Bulletin now is printed in Rochester and trucked to the Binghamton area.

Here's what the newspaper printing plant looked like when it opened in June 2006.
