The Ithaca Police Chief is credited with saving a man’s life following a two-car crash January 3 on State Route 13 in the Town of Ithaca.

New York State Police say Chief Pete Tyler was in the area at about 2:40 p.m. and stopped to help before Troopers arrived.

Chief Tyler began life-saving measures on a man who was bleeding from the head and not breathing.  The 54-year-old Ithaca man was last listed in critical condition after being flown to Upstate University Medical Center in Syracuse.

Troopers say a 24-year-old pregnant woman from Dryden, who was driving the other vehicle at the intersection at Lower Creek Road, was taken to Cayuga Medical Center as a precaution.

Investigators say the man was driving a 2012 Hyundai Sonata and was stopped, facing north at the intersection but failed to yield the right of way to the 1999 Plymouth Breeze that was turning left.  The woman’s car caught fire, which was put out by troopers using two fire extinguishers.  Authorities say the man, whose name has not been released, was not wearing a seat belt.

The investigation is on-going.
