New year, new wardrobe, right!? If you can't afford to splurge on a whole new set of clothes right now, you might want to at least consider clearing out your closet of the clothes that you can't or don't wear any longer. Bustle poses the question of when is it time to get rid of your old clothes?

  • They're worn beyond repair which could refer to that lucky pair of pants that have holes in them from wearing them so often or that a shirt that you love even though it has a terribly obvious stain on the hem from a night out that you will always remember. If you have yet to try to sew the holes or bleach the stains, you should just get rid of the clothes.
  • It's uncomfortable to wear and if that is the case then why did you buy it in the first place?!? No matter the reason for it being in your closet, think long and hard about if you will ever wear that uncomfortable shirt and dress again... probably not, right?
  • You haven't worn it in over a year then you should consider donating the piece of clothing. You don't like the item that much if you could wear it and choose not to. Unless it is clothing for a specific occasion (like a black tie affair or scuba diving adventure) then I can assume that those events don't happen every year for you.

Clothes are a tough thing to get rid of because we always remember when we wore that one dress on the first date with so-and-so or you wore that shirt when you met your favorite band, or whatever happened to you. It can get sentimental, but you also need to remember that it's good to refresh your wardrobe from time-to-time and let go of things.
