Health officials are cautioning residents in the Twin Tiers, Central New York and Northern New York to take precautions to avoid health issues associated with extremely hot and humid conditions.

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory to 8 p.m. June 18.

NOAA says Heat Index values are expected to reach between 95 and 100 degrees due to air temperatures around 90 and dewpoints in the low 70s.

The combination of hog temperature and high humidity can create a situation where heat illnesses are possible.

The Broome County Health Department says 27 cooling centers may be available, but residents should call ahead.  Listings of cooling centers can be found at www.health.ny.gov/environmenta/weather/cooling/countycenters.htm.

Residents are told to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air conditioning and out of the sun. Limit time outdoors, especially in the heat of the day, wear light colored, loose clothing and reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.  Absolutely do NOT leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle, even with the windows open.

Provide outdoor pets with adequate shady shelter and plenty of water.

Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Heat stroke is an emergency.  Anyone suffering from heat stroke or seeing anyone else suffering heat exhaustion or stroke should call 911 immediately.
