We are all familiar with that voice in our heads that sometimes tells us that we're not good enough, or it convinces us that one more cookie is a good idea. It's a bad influence, really. Bustle found some effective ways to get that negative voice out of our heads.

  • Acknowledge the thought because the more that you try to push it away, the more it will try to bust through and take over your mind. Recognize the thought and allow yourself to try to understand why these thoughts are occurring.
  • Combat with positive affirmations such as "You are beautiful", or "You can do anything that you set your mind to". Putting happy thoughts and positive words into your mind can allow you to be kinder and more gentle to yourself.
  • Name the negative thought which I know sounds so, so silly, but give the thought a name like "George" or "Stanley". If you give it a name then you can talk and fight back to it. Let "Lydia" know that you drive your own car, but she can come along for the ride.

Addressing the thoughts can sometimes be more powerful than trying to pretend as though they aren't there. If you can change the way that you think, you can do anything.
