Florence Brings Flash Flooding to Twin Tiers

Residents in the Twin Tiers are finding rising waters again due to heavy rain, this time from the remnants of Hurricane Florence.

As of 1:30 a.m. September 18,  the National Weather Service had issued flash flood warnings for a number of areas in Broome, Chenango, Tioga, Corltand, Tompkins and Chemung Counties in New York and the northwest corner of Susquehanna County and part of Bradford County in Pennsylvania.

The National Weather Service said flooding was expected in Newark Valley, Whitney Point, Danby, Caroline, Berkshire,Erin, Willet and Harford.

In Tompkins County, there was a report of water around a house in Itaska with residents being evacuated at at 2:50 a.m. motorists reported two feet of water across Castle Creek Road off exit 7 from Interstate 81 in Castle Creek.

Water over roadways, even ones that are not flooded, can be dangerous with the possibility of hydroplaning.

Motorists are advised to use extreme caution and be prepared to turn around should they encounter water over roads or barricades set up by authorities.  Drowning is the #1 cause of death in most tropical storms

A Flood Watch was due to expire at midday September 18.

Rain was predicted to taper off by the middle of the day as the tropical system continues to track to the north and east.
