Flags at all New York State government buildings are flying at half-staff in honor of the Department of Transportation worker who died after a crash on Route 17.

Dennis "Matt" Howe of Candor died Monday night of injuries he sustained last Wednesday when a tractor-trailer slammed into a DOT truck in a work zone in Nichols.

Governor Andrew Cuomo Tuesday morning ordered flags to half-staff until interment.

In a statement, Cuomo said: "I am saddened by the loss of Matt Howe, a dedicated public servant and Department of Transportation employee."

In the statement, the governor said Howe "served DOT Region 9 and the people of the State of New York honorably. As a maintenance worker, he was a jack of all trades who was always eager to lend a hand to the team."

37-year-old Lawrence Faucett of Ulster, Pennsylvania, the driver of the tractor-trailer that struck the DOT vehicle, has been accused of violating the state's Move Over Law. He also was cited for moving from a lane unsafely.
