Bob Joseph/WNBF News [file][/caption]The man who brutally murdered an Oxford man at the victim’s home on a remote lake-side road in 2016 has died in prison.

47-year-old Jeremy Coates was only seven months into serving his life sentence at the Auburn State Prison for murdering 58-year-old David Green in his Charles Kelley Road home when the Department of Corrections reports Coates had died on January 18.

His cause of death has not been disclosed.

Coates, and his girlfriend, 43-year-old Melissa Crispell knew Green and apparently had been at his home looking for marijuana.

Authorities say Coates and Crispell brutally beat Green 20 times with a hammer, battle-ax and a 75-pound stone slab before making off with guns, money, marijuana and other items.

Recently, two other men convicted in high-profile local cases have also died in prison.

Almond Upton, who intentionally ran over Trooper Christopher Skinner on Interstate 81 near Castle Creek in 2014, died in prison in December after serving two years of his life sentence. His cause of death was not disclosed.

40-year-old Christian Maire of Port Dickinson, who was convicted of running an international internet child pornography ring, was killed during a fight at Milan Detention Center near Detroit January 2. He was only one month into serving his 40-year prison sentence.
