People who've visited Binghamton City Hall seeking recycling bins lately have been disappointed.

The city has had no plastic bins to distribute to residents for at least several days.

Signs posted at City Hall recommend that residents "check back after the holidays."

Deputy mayor Jared Kraham said he expects a new supply of recycling bins will be available Wednesday for those who need them.

Kraham late Tuesday said the plastic bins are property of Broome County. He said the city provides a distribution point for the county.

In an email, Kraham wrote that the "bins can be picked up at City Hall as a courtesy to residents."

Kraham wrote: "The reason we haven't had those bins is because Broome County did not have any available. It was not the City that ran out of the, it was Broome County."

Debra Smith, Broome County director of solid waste management, said the city and other municipalities make arrangements to transport recycling bins to their offices for distribution.

Smith said the city had been notified a few days ago that additional bins were available. She said the Binghamton public works department usually picks up 200 bins at a time.

Smith said between 7,000 and 9,000 new recycling bins are distributed in Broome County annually.
