An industrial hemp operation proposed for the Southern Tier could result in the creation of hundreds of jobs.

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer Monday said a Canadian company is planning to develop a facility that could serve as a "hub for processing, research and development" of hemp.

Speaking in front of the Binghamton federal building on Henry Street, Schumer said Canopy Growth Corporation of Ontario is about to sign a contract on a location for the facility "very, very soon." The senator declined to disclose the proposed site.

Representatives of Canopy Growth were unavailable to discuss the company's plans for the Southern Tier operation.

In a statement, State Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo said the firm's plan proves that industrial hemp can "be a major economic driver for our region."
