Some families who are thinking about taking up camping can get a big boost getting started from New York State.

The Bureau of Recreation is taking applications from New York residents interested in a trial run at "roughing it" who could get all they need for a wildlife weekend.

Winning first-time campers will get a family tent, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, camp chairs, a lantern, camp stove and don't forget the firewood.

No clue on even what to do with all that stuff?  Successful applicants will be greeted by  a camping ambassador to get them started.

13 parks around New York State are involved in the program

Space is limited and applications are being taken through May 20.  Applicants will be chosen randomly through a lottery system to fill the available slots.

For more information contact the Bureau of Recreation at (518) 457-2500.
