The Broome County Dog Shelter has been very busy this summer, caring for and adopting dozens of dogs and puppies and is preparing for even more activity in the fall.

Shelter Director Kelly Conlon and shelter dog Otis are the special guests on the August 19 & 26 edition of the weekly, local public affairs program Southern Tier Close Up to talk about what people should know before taking the plunge into pet adoption.

Conlon says adding a furry family member is fulfilling but really needs to be carefully thought out to make sure the humans' and dogs' needs are both equally and adequately met.  She says, this time of year, there is a particular concern about college students with big hearts wanting to get a pet but not taking into consideration the long-term including housing, finances for basic and medical needs and who is the permanent care-giver of the pet.

Otis, the Pug/Chihuahua mix (Puhuahua?), is an example of how an adult dog ( he's a 3-year-old stray whose owner didn't claim him) is just as good a pet and as cute as a puppy.

The Broome County Dog Shelter is now open Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

You can find more information about adopting a dog from the shelter by calling (607) 778-2493, on the web at www.gobroomecounty.com/shelter and see adoptable dogs at www.petfinder.org. Dog shelter pamphlets are also available at our studios at 59 Court Street, Binghamton, N.Y.

Southern Tier Close Up is heard Sunday at 6 a.m. on WIld 104.
