Broome County Moves Forward With Emergency Communications Upgrades

Broome County is set to replace its emergency communications radio tower at Ely Park as it upgrades its aging public safety system.

The county held a public meeting to talk about the installation of a new, 200-foot tall tower that will replace one that’s part of a system designed in the 1970s.  The county is also doubling the number of its emergency radio towers under a $10 million investment.

Officials say the systems are so old, they can’t just be upgraded to handle modern technology.

Under the Ely Park tower plan, the County will use grant money to pay for the permits needed to place the installation on City of Binghamton-owned property.  The tower covers Binghamton, Endwell, Endicott and Johnson City.
