Binghamton Public Radio Stations Plan Program Changes

After years of consideration, major programming revisions are about to be implemented at the two radio stations operated by WSKG Public Media.

Next month, WSKG-FM will adopt a "News and Conversation" format. WSQX-FM will convert to an all-music format featuring mostly classical with some jazz and folk programs.

WSKG President and CEO Greg Catlin said the changes "have been talked about for the better part of the last decade."

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program Monday, Catlin said the two stations have been "dual format" stations with some news and some music programming.

Catlin said under the current set-up, listeners often found themselves switching back-and-forth seeking a specific type of program. He said that arrangement can be confusing for the radio audience.

Catlin said research conducted for WSKG "clearly shows that this is the right thing to do." He said without the changes, there was a risk the stations would become stagnant, outdated and irrelevant.

The programming changes are scheduled to take effect on February 3.
