Bereavement Leave Expansion Legislation Vetoed by Gov. Cuomo

New Yorkers mourning the loss of a loved one will not get additional time to deal with affairs following the veto of a bill to expand paid family leave.

December 28, Governor Andrew Cuomo rejected the bill to allow workers to take up to 12 weeks of paid leave following the death of a family member.

The Business Council was among those opposing the expansion saying it would put too great of a burden on employers, especially those with a very small number of people working for them.

The bill was sponsored by Republican Senator Richard Funk and former Democratic Assembly Majority Leader, now Congressman Joe Morelle.

Employers usually provide about four days bereavement leave for employees who experience the death of a spouse or child.
